Being a mom keeps women busier than most people may imagine. As moms, there are a lot of hats to wear. And although some moms wear more hats than others, it’s safe to say that most moms could use a little balance in their lives. Children are only children for a moment in time, and the days of “Mommy, Look at me!” are fleeting. So, if you’re a mom who is feeling the stress, here are three easy steps to help you avoid the dreaded “mommy meltdown.”
Step 1: Set Your Personal Priorities
Whether you are a stay at home mom, a work outside the home mom, or a work at home mom, all moms are working moms. They are the hearts of their families, and they keep their children and the world moving. When attempting to achieve a better balance in life, it is important to establish what it is in life that is the most important to you.
So, ask yourself this: Do you want to reach the top of your career track and be the best possible financial backing for your family? Or, are you a mom who wants to ensure her house and children are ready for company at a moment’s notice? Maybe your goal is not to have a singular focus but instead achieve a better overall balance.
Regardless of what your personal priorities are, it is best to try and pinpoint them, so you can focus on organizing your life around them. Limit your focus to as few items as possible to avoid a mommy meltdown.
Step 2: Hold Yourself More Accountable
When people think of holding themselves accountable, it often comes with negative connotations. The last thing that any mother wants to do when attempting to achieve balance is setting themselves up for failure. So, focus your priorities on a positive accountability program. The best thing about setting priorities?
You are on your way to achieving or maintaining something that always means a reward. When there is a positive reward to work toward, the more likely it will be to meet that goal. When attempting to find balance, your personal reward could be taking an hour for yourself. Perhaps you need some one-on-one time with your significant other.
Avoiding a mommy meltdown could mean spending time with a child you’ve been missing. Whatever your reward, hold yourself accountable by focusing on the result, and then reward yourself for achieving it.
Step 3: Find a Moment for Yourself
Every mother wants to be at the top of her game. However, to be the best possible version of yourself, it is imperative to carve out some “me” time. Whether its 10 minutes a day, an hour a week, or an hour a day, taking the opportunity to focus on yourself will help keep you happier, healthier, and able to conquer your world.
To a keep from having a mommy meltdown, grab a few minutes and take a bath or a walk. You could do a workout, read a book, write, meditate, or even take a nap. Do whatever it is that will help you feel rejuvenated. Remember, you can only take care of your family when you are at your best.
Finding balance is not easy. Sadly, most moms handle the world and leave themselves in the dust. But neglecting yourself will inevitably lead to a mommy meltdown, either by sickness, injury or mental breakdown, and then your family will follow. By putting yourself first and finding a balance, you’ll eliminate the stress and anxiety that so many mothers feel.
